Grandma's Oatmeal Cookies

My grandmother was one of the pioneers who settled in North Dakota in the late 1800's. Her name was Petra Pedersen and in the old country, Norway, she married Dagfin Olsen. Here is a wedding picture of her and Dagfin. They settled in North Dakota near Rugby and Barton where they operated a farm. Petra and Dagfin had 13 children.

I adored my "mom" and "pupup." She was the most fantastic cook I've ever known and I still make a lot of her dishes--especially at Christmas. One of my favorites is her oatmeal cookies which was passed down from who knows where. I like to think it originated in Norway--which it likely did. Norwegians love their goodies. What I love about these cookies is the flexability. You can make them plain or add chocolate or nuts, raisins, or seeds. You can make them more healthy or less and they are always yummy.

Grandma's Oatmeal Cookies

1 cup shortening
1 cup sour milk
(Sour the milk by adding a tablespoon of vinegar)
(You can substiture sour cream or yogurt for the shortening and milk)
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon soda
1 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla

Mix these ingredients together and add:
Chips, coconut, nuts seeds--whatever sounds good.
3 cups oatmeal (use old fashioned oats.)
3 cups flour
(If you use yogurt or sour cream you may need to cut the flour. Also, here, I will often use 1 cup of wheat or bran flour and 2 cups of all-purpose unbleached.)

Watch the consistancy--I used yogurt and even by cutting the flour by 1/2 cup--they were a little dry.

The cookies should stay in a nice mound and not flatten out. They are moist and chewy and delicious. At least I think so. For me, they substute as breakfast.

And I can't make them without seeing my grandma Petra in the kitchen. She endured a lot of hardships and struggles throughout her life. One thing I remember is that she was very stubborn. She wouldn't learn English and if you wanted to talk with her, you spoke Norwegian. And I did. Sadly, when she died, so did my ability to speak a second language.

Whenever I make these cookies, I remember her and smile.

Rushford Christmas Letter, 2011

Dear Family and Friends!

What a year this has been! Many of you already know about our trip of a lifetime—a 111 day trip around the world. It was a working trip—I landed a job teaching creative writing on the ms Amsterdam (Holland

America

), but oh, what a fantastic journey. We visited over 50 ports in mostly warm places. Ron ran over 300 miles on and off the ship and is looking into presenting running programs for cruise ships. We left January 5th and came back the end of April.

Once again, there will be no trip to Grand Forks, or Edmonton, or Idaho, for Christmas as we visited North Dakota and Minnesota in May and October. (In May, Ron, Jonathan, Ben, Caryl, Nick and Tom ran in the Fargo 5K and half marathon and did very well.) Ron and I will be home enjoying our tree and celebrating 48 years of marriage. My mother, Dagny passed away in June, and we miss her—especially now as the holidays are upon us.

On the family front, Caryl and Ben are hurriedly getting their house in Grand Forks ready to sell. David and Shelley are still in Edmonton, Alberta and David recently received his Canadian citizenship. Corisa and Nick are spending their first Christmas in their new home in Dundas, MN near St. Olaf College. Hannah and her husband, Tom Harmon, have a new baby girl, Adalia Rose. The count on great grandchildren is up to eight now. Andrea (13) and Madelyn (5) have taken up knitting and crocheting—following in their nana's footsteps in the craft department. Corisa will graduate from UND in May of 2012 and we are so proud of her. Christopher and Kyrstin are working and being wonderful and living in Couer d' Alene. Christian and Jonathan are living at home, working and enjoying their art and music.

We just celebrated Andrea’s 13^th birthday. She is very much into horses and through the experience with horses, Caryl and Ben have developed Stable Days Youth Ranch, a non-profit organization providing the horsemanship experience to children. You'll have to check them out on facebook.

As for us, Ron is still running nearly every day, working out and staying in great shape. Unforunately, my health is not so wonderful. In addition to the hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (enlarged heart muscle—a genetic defect) I now have atrial fibrillation and am on a pacemaker-defibrilator. I actually feel good and my heart is still beating so I’m happy.

News on the writing front is exciting. I have a mystery coming out soon and have been putting some of my out-of-print books, like the Angel Delaney Mysteries online for the Kindle and Nook and other e-readers. With no contract, I have had plenty of time to make gifts, which I love doing.

So—thankfully, life goes on. And here we are celebrating another Christmas with gratefulness and joy in our hearts always remembering the greatest gift of all. We pray that joy will reach out to you as well. With much love,

To Blog or not to Blog.

Blogging is a issue a number of friends and I have discussed a number of times. For those of us who are writers, blogging, according to the marketing gurus, is the thing to do if you want to to sell our books, articles and the like. It's part of building our platform. Of course we all want to sell what we write, but I'm curious as to how many people really like blogging and why they do it.

If you weren't trying to market your books and yourself, would you be blogging at all? Not that marketing is a bad thing, I just wonder if that's all there is.

I began my blog a few years ago when someone at a writer's conference said I really should blog and have a website and actively promote myself on the internet. Soooo. I started a blog. Put up a couple of entries and fizzled out. I felt guilty and inadequate. But then I have never been much of a self-promoter. I do have a website that really looks pretty good. But the blog? I couldn't help asking:

What did I have to write about?

How could I sustain something like this long term?

When would I find time? I was fortunate enough to have contracts coming in on a regular basis.

Did I really want to expose myself to the world?

What was blogging really all about?

Was anyone really interested in what I had to say?

Despite my tongue in cheek assertion on my website that I know everything, I really had to wonder if blogging was for me. It isn't as though I don't have a lot to say because I do and I've written over fifty books to prove it. When the opportunity arose to take a world cruise and serve as the creative writing instructor, I realized that blogging would be a great way to share my experience with family and friends and to keep a journal for myself. I made the promise and stuck with it. Now that I am home, I'm back to the old questions. What should I write about and does anybody really care?

I'm not sure, but I thought it might be a good idea, especially after seeing that my son and granddaughter are blogging just because. But that still leaves me with what to write about. Writing? Life in general? Sharing thoughts and ideas and philosophies--pet peeves? Maybe a place to write what's on my heart--like a journal. And again, I wonder who cares?

Maybe a blog should be a question and answer thing. Like an advice column. I applied once after Ann Landers died--suggested doing a column called "Pat Answers." Guess they didn't see the humor. I could do an advice blog about writing, but I think that's being covered. I think I would rather say what I think.

These two have become an inspiration in finding my way to a blog. I think the secret is to be who I am--not to worry about selling books or making myself a star. I gave up being a best selling author long time ago, when I learned the truth about publishing and the mid-list author. Okay--so I would like to sell books and maybe continue speaking and writing and making a living. But for the blog, it will be what it will be.

I will share whatever feels right. Perhaps friends will stop in from time to time as I touch on subjects and issues that sound appealing. Perhaps not.

One Journey Ends--Another begins

My son told me awhile back that I forgot to end the cruise--that I left everyone in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. You probably already figured out that we made it to Ft. Lauderdale and had a non-eventful flight back to the Pacific Northwest. The cruise was an amazing experience and believe it or not, after 110 days, I still love cruising. So does Ron. We are looking to do something a bit shorter though--perhaps this winter.

So, now it's time to end that journey and embark on another. We'd been home for only four days when my heart started flipping out--went into atrial fibrillation and would not convert. I got a ride in an ambulance. This was actually my second ambulance ride ever, but on the first one I remember nothing.

My heart eventually converted and I was given additional medication. Less than a week later it happened again. I ended up staying in the hospital for a week and came out with an ICD (pacemaker/defibrillator).

Since I needed time to rest, I went back to Grand Forks to be with my daughter and her family--I had to go see my adorable new great-grandbaby, Adalia Rose. My time there was, of course, rich and rewarding--UNTIL I got the call saying my mother was in ICU and not expected to live. I cut my visit short by a couple of days and the following day, the doctor and social worker arranged for her to go to the hospice house. I was with her night and day until she passed away seven days later.

The journey from life to death is a painful one. Someday I will write about that journey as well.

Rough days at Sea

What day is it? I forgot to look in the elevator this morning. For two days we had rough seas with waves around 16 feet. Me, who had been doing quite well warding off seasickness succumbed. Threw up. Yuk. Was sick for two days, then seas calmed and I was fine. Then the next day my heart went into artial fibrillation during my class. Thought is was the same old spells I get, but it wasn't. Went to the infirmery. Long story short, I'm on extra meds until I can get home to my cardiologist.

BUT I am doing fine and back on track. Winding up my class on creative writing and looking forward to getting home--at least for a while. :-)

Unexpected Vistas

Madeira—an Island Panoramic

Day 104; April 19, 2011

We arrived in Port at Funchel, which means Fennel—so named because it grows profusely here. Bananas grow here too—like weeds. They are a small bananas and are very sweet. We took our final tour today and at times as we rode our bus through the mountain switchbacks, I worried that it really might be our last. I had expected hills, but not mountain peaks. At one place we stopped to walk a trail out to a point that is the second highest sea cliff in the world. What a gorgeous view. The island is actually part of Africa. With its multi levels and high humidity is tropical but it also is cool. Tourism is big here. They have many four and five star hotels. Churchill loved the place and in the place he stayed (Reiz) they actually have a painting of his and a photo showing him paint.

Though the area is hilly, it is quite a farming community. The crops are grown in terraced plots on steep hillsides. They have many vineyards and produce Madeira wine for export. And they grow every fruit imaginable.

One of our stops was at the top of a mountain 1800m high. We had a fennel cake or scone, coffee and coke at the restaurant/gift shop up there. It was cool and while we were there clouds rolled in, but not before we got some fantastic photos. The mountains were similar to ours, only most of the trees were Eucalyptus and pine.

After our tour we had lunch on the ship and took the shuttle into town. We had an early sailing so we didn’t get off the bus, just rode it into town enjoyed the sights and wished we could have stayed longer.

Palm Sunday in Spain

Cadez, Spain—Palm Sunday

102 days; 4/17/2011

Cadez is situated on the East Atlantic Coast. While we had to walk a bit to get out of the port area, we were pleasantly surprised. We stopped first at a beautiful plaza, continued on to a street too narrow for cars and then into another plaza. Lots of statuary or important buildings in the plazas. We went down another street and found San Antonio Plaza and a very old ornate cathedral and a more shops. One of the buildings surrounding the square had ornate tile work and a lovely balcony. I thought it should be overlooking the sea. We then headed toward the water and were treated to an amazing park. Much of the ancient sea wall still stood. The park and walkway greeted us with arbors and tiled seats, fountains and Banyan trees as old as time. We found another beautiful and ornate church and watched the congregation march in from down the street. I think there is such a thing as visual overload. We must have walked seven miles before heading back to the ship. Even though we have a ten o-clock sailing we stayed on board. My legs were worn out. I do wish we’d have gone out again because we missed a spectacular Palm Sunday procession where all of the churches participated in an extravagant and an awesome parade. Quite something to see, or so I was told.

Only one more port before we sail across the Atlantic. It’s hard to believe we’ve been gone so long. On one hand, I’m anxious to get home. On the other, I hate to say good-bye. What an incredible journey this has been.

Sea day tomorrow and then Madeira, Portugal. Formal night tonight with a Roaring Twenties theme.

Cartegena, Spain—A Mediterranean Jewel

What a great port. We walked off the ship and into the most beautiful port area we’ve seen outside of Sydney. Cobblestone streets took us right onto a palm-studded promenade along the waterfront, then into a lovely plaza area, which lead into town. Older ornate buildings mingled with new. The main street bustled with tourists from two large cruise ships—ours, the ms Amsterdam and our sister ship, the Neau Amsterdam. We toured the new ship, which is huge and new and quite lovely. I could get used to it, but this is home. At least for the next few days.

After a couple of hours we made our way back to the ship. Sailing time was around four, so a short day here.

Roman Holiday

Rome

Day 99; 4/14/2011

We docked in the port of Civitavecchia, Italy. It is a lovely city north of Rome and I wish we’d had time to explore it, but this was our day for a nine hour tour in Rome and celebrate Ron’s birthday. We boarded the bus and for one and a half hours, drove through the Roman countryside. I was the ship’s escort on this trip so had to work a bit keeping track of errant passengers—and there were a few. At a rest stop one sweet little lady with a walker had her latte and just when we were supposed to be boarding the bus—went to use the bathroom.

And then on to Rome. Soon we were in the city—heavy heavy traffic met us and stayed with us throughout the tour. It is Easter week and soon Palm Sunday. Tourists are in Rome to visit the Vatican, the Citadel and St. Peter’s Basilica.

The first thing we saw was the original wall that circled for sixteen miles around the ancient city. Much of the wall is still there and intact. Then the ruins of the Roman baths. Everywhere we went, we saw signs of the ancient and glorious Rome. Statues, cathedrals, palaces and squares. As we entered the forum, all I could do was weep. I have seen pictures of these ruins, I’ve heard the stories, but nothing can compare to being in the midst of the forum. The coliseum left me awestruck. Since this tour did not allow us to get out to walk around the forum, we could only see it as the bus slowly drove us around.

We must have taken a 1000 pictures as we made our way through the city. Then it was time for the Vatican. We waited for half an hour in line to enter St. Peter’s Basilica. While we waited our eyes feasted on the exterior. The columns, the statues, the courtyard, the marble. I took our little lady with the walker in through the handicap area where we waited for the others. The tour guides handed out listening devices so we could hear her throughout the tour.

Once inside I was so taken by the beauty, I found it hard to breath. Elegant, extravagant, exquisite, holy. I walked around with my mouth open the entire time, at times so astounded, I couldn’t speak. I was face to face with Michelangelo’s work. Behind a plastic façade stood the magnificent statue of Mary holding her crucified Christ. In a dome high above us was a signed painting by him. Many of what looked like paintings were actually mosaics, which allowed visitors to take photos inside. I could go on and on, but suffice to say we were impressed, blown away, awed by the visuals depicting our Lord and the people who have brought Christ’s message through the ravages of history.

After viewing the basilica, we went to lunch in a lovely Italian restaurant. Red wine, salad, lasagna, tiramisu—all authentic and all delicious. If you can believe it, several of the people from the ship didn’t like the lasagna because it didn’t have flour in it. FLOUR—for Pete’s sake. Ron and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal if not the company.

Then we were off again to complete the tour. We went through the more modern Rome, past more ruins—saw Circus Maximus and far too many places to mention. We stopped for an hour at a lovely Plaza and were given 45 minutes to walk about and shop. Here things went a bit sour. We were to meet at three and be on the bus by 3:15. Several were late, but one little lady decided to go shopping for a hat at three. The tour guide had to make two trips back to the plaza to find her. People were ready to leave her there. A taxi back to the ship would have run around $300. Fifteen minutes later, she arrived with the tour guide, gaily showing off her purchase. Sigh.

At any rate, despite the problem travelers—some who should not have been on the tour-we had a fantastic time in Rome. Rome is more than photos of ruins and beautiful buildings and traffic. It is a feeling—it is knowing how insignificant I am in the grand scheme of things. It is a place where Christians lost their lives for their faith. It is history come alive. I want to come back. As our tour guide says, you can’t see Rome in a day. We made a valiant effort.

We drove back to the ship and after cleaning up and getting dressed in fancy duds, spent the evening with Barbara and Waldo, our tablemates, who treated us to dinner in the elegant Pinnacle Dining room for Ron’s Birthday. Great food, great conversation and great ambiance. We say goodbye to Rome and set sail for Spain.

Athens, the Parthenon and Acropolis

Days 97 & 98; April 12-13, 2011

We are docked in Piraeus, Greece, near Athens. Ron and I had a tour today to Athens and the Parthenon and Acropolis. Acropolis means high place and getting there meant hiking up the often slippery hillside (as in a few hundred stairs). The first residents moved up to the mountain in about 3500 BC . It is colossal and one wonders at the brilliance of the architects in that time. The stairs pass through the Proylea or colossal entry to the upper terrace. Here we saw the Pinacotheca and the small Temple of Athena Nike, which is anything but small. The structures are breathtaking. Pictures don’t do it justice. Standing there amidst the ruins and the rebuilding efforts –the columns and the statues takes your breath away as you consider the civilization that lived here thousands of years before. Below the Parthenon we saw the stage and amphitheater where the great orators such as Plato and Socrates shared their knowledge and philosophies.

So many ruins and so much rebuilding. And the marble. You can see where the old tan marble meets the new white, but because the marble contains some iron, the white will turn color and eventually you will not be able to tell old from new.

We also stopped at the site of the 2006 Olympic Games. We saw dozens of important places, palaces, gardens and statues and such, but none as amazing as the Acropolis.

Turkey Day!

Day 93; April 8, 2011

Kusadasi is the gateway to Ephesus, The Virgin Mary’s House, and the Basilica of St. John. We did not book tours here. We walked out to an island and explored an old Venecian Fort, then walked back into town and had Starbuck’s coffee. Then I walked the streets—and bazaars—hundreds and hundreds of little shop. The vendors were as pushy as the Arabs, but in a friendly way. A little too friendly at times. I bought a beautiful silk scarf. There are many rug merchants here, as well as jewelry and leather. All beautiful and spendy.

The second day here, I stayed on board and worked on my book. One can grow tired of merchants, however cute, pleading with you to come into the store—“just to look.”

Ephesus, one of the best preserved ancient cities, is on my list to visit next time I come this way. The Great Temple of Artemis there is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Ancient Ruins of Jonah’s City

Day 91 at Sea; April 6, 2011

Ashdod, Israel is situated 16 miles south of Tel Aviv. I took a tour to old Jaffa and Tel Aviv. It took us over an hour to drive from Port due to heavy commuter traffic. Our first stop was at old Jaffa. Our guide, a delightful older woman who wore her long, light gray hair in two ponytails and looked a bit like a hippy, led us through the most amazing maze that was once Jaffa, the fishing village where Jonah met his match with God and the Whale.

The passageways might have been suited for donkeys or horses, but no cars. Everything was built of yellow stone. Think 12^th century BC. Many of the ruins have been renovated but still maintained the texture and of the ancient city. What a tour. I must have taken 300 photos as we wove our way through. It is now the home of artists and crafts people. Every shop has its own unique appearance. We meandered around for over an hour and eventually came to this park above the city and could look down the coast to see modern Tel Aviv.

We made our way back down and went past more of the old city, much being restored in the same manner it was originally built, to the fishing dock. After our walk through Old Jaffa, we drove through modern Tel Aviv. Some interesting architecture and history, but not nearly as wonderful as the old. J

Turkey is beautiful. Very Mediterranean. I want to come back here

Sailing Through the Suez

Day 89 & 90 at Sea; April 5, 2011

April 4^th finds us at the south end of the Suez Canal and waiting with a dozen or so other ships to make out way to the Mediterranean Sea.

The Suez Canal takes us from Suez on the Red Sea to Port Said on the Mediterranean Sea. The Egyptian side is generally green and fertile, primarily due to the River Nile delta. The Sinai side is arid (no fresh water only salt) and littered with army posts built along the shore at strategic intervals. You even see some army tanks and vestiges of wars. The difference is staggering. It was finished in 1869. Did you know that Giuseppe Verdi’s opera, Aida was written to commemorate the opening of the Suez Canal. It premiered at the Cairo Opera House in 1871.

At the north and south ends, the channel is too narrow for ships to pass so ships line up on either side to go through, pass in the middle, at Great Bitter Lake, and continue on. Each ship is given a number and only so many are allowed through. We were the first!

We celebrated coming into the Mediterranean Sea—I think we were all relieved to be out of the strict Muslin area and into a more western culture again. Our first port is Ashdod, Israel.

Aqaba Jordon

Day 88 at Sea; April 3, 2011

Though we are docked in Jordon. As I sit in the library writing I can see Eilat, Israel across the narrow Gulf of Aqaba. A Costa Cruise ship is docked in Eilat after having been here in Jordan. Aqaba sits at the very tip of Jordon. From here tours go to Petra, and Wadi Rum. Aqaba is a beach and diving city. After lunch, we took the shuttle into town and explored the ancient ruins of Ayla, an archeological dig in progress, which is near the pier. In 1980s serious excavation began on the site. They have build a museum to hold and protect the artifacts found there. It’s quite amazing to see the walls of the city and what look like arched rooms. The shopping didn’t pan out. We walked along the beach, had a coke at MacDonald’s and visited an elegant Swiss Hotel. Then, yes, we were hot and tired and took the shuttle back to the bus.

And we are now lounging by the pool. Such a life.

I would have loved to see these amazing places. Other passengers come back delighted and awed. Maybe next time. We found a packet of post cards on Petra, but how wonderful it would be to see it in person.

Safaga, Egypt

Day 87 at Sea; April 2, 2011

Today I waded in the Red Sea buried by feet in Egyptian sand sat in the shade of an umbrella enjoying a cool North African breeze. I did not get a tour to Luxor or the Valley of the Kings or Karnac. I didn’t get to take the long drive with buses and vans caravanning across the desert. We did walk out to the Port gate and take a taxi with eight other people from the ship. For $60 our driver took us to the Holiday Inn Resort where we paid $15 each to enjoy the lovely grounds and use their beach and get a towel and swim in the pools or in the sea. The water was much colder than I expected.

As we disembarked we were puzzled to see hundreds of people with large carts of furniture. Someone said they were returning to Egypt after having fled to safety. We never did find out for sure. There weren’t a lot of tourists around.

We came back to the ship around one for lunch and spent the rest of the day luxuriating on Lido Deck.

The buses with all the touring passengers did not arrive until seven thirty, which was our sailing time. They made it without incident, though I heard one woman fainted in one of the tombs—probably heatstroke.

Happy April Fools’ Day

Day 86 at sea; April 1, 2011

This is the third day at sea since Oman. Today is Friday—at least that’s what the rug in the elevators say. I don’t know how I will keep track of time without them. The days are going by entirely too fast.

We are now sailing in the Red Sea and headed for Safaga, Egypt. Because of the political unrest our captain determined we could not stop in Egypt. Now, however we have been given clearance to go there and will dock in Safaga tomorrow am. We’re excited to have this port back on the itinerary.

Yesterday I taught on Writing about Things and today the class will share what they have written. As for me, I shall work on my book as my presentations are ready for the next few sea days.

I have been getting up around 5:30 in the morning and going to the Library/Explorers lounge. I confiscate one of five leather chairs with ottomans so I can keep my legs up.

Would really like prayer in getting my book finished. And for clarity and the ability to focus.

Dangerous Waters

Day 85 at sea; March 31, 2011

We have been sailing off the coast of Yemen, where there is so much unrest. We are flanked by two navy ships, one US, one Dutch. Today we will leave the Arabean Sea (the Gulf of Aden) and sail through a small opening with Yemen to the north and east and Djibouti to the west. This is the entrance to the Red Sea.

Yesterday was deemed Celebration Day to collectively celebrate life. We had a formal night and free wine with dinner. Then at 9:30 in the evening, we had a dessert extravaganza. The chefs created an amazing and delectable array of sculptures, ice and chocolate and everything imaginable. All edible. We had white and dark chocolate fountains, a chocolate palace and ship. Wow. And what took more than 24 hours to create was torn apart and eaten within an hour. Thankfully, we had a time to take photos before the guests could start eating.

We have four sea days in a row and I am hoping to get a lot of writing done. We are having trouble with our internet so I haven’t been able to get on.

Salalah, Oman—City of Palms and Beaches

We hadn’t booked a tour here even though our tablemate, Barbara, insisted we couldn’t miss seeing Job’s tomb. The day we docked I had planned to spend the day writing. However, a friend came up and asked if I wanted to go with her as her hubby was not feeling well. Of course, I said.

The countryside was arid and not to interesting, but as we headed inland, I was surprised by how high the mountains actually were. They were dry, but lovely and apparently very green and fertile when the monsoons come.

We saw boswellia trees which produce frankincense—one of their major exports. This area and a small area in N. Africa are the only places these trees grow naturally. The frankincense comes from the bark, like sap. We saw lots of camels along the road roaming free. Beautiful vistas greeted us as we made our way through the mountains and eventually to Job’s tomb. So, yes, I did get to see it. Is it really Job’s tomb? And is the giant footprint encased in cement for real? I’m not convinced—especially not about the footprint. Just how does one preserve a footprint for that long. But, the site was lovely. It sits at the top of the hill and is a mosque and mausoleum and one must dress conservatively—and women must cover their heads arms and legs.

When impressed me most was the city itself. A very large area in town is dedicated to growing bananas and coconuts. Many fruit stands lined the road and much of the fruit is exported. Amazing to see all that green in the middle of town.

We went to a square where one of three of the Sultan’s Palaces, a gorgeous beach and a large souk were all within two minutes walk. We shopped—lots of clothing, perfume and incense. The beach—white sands and turquoise water made us wish we could stay for a while. But alas, the bus awaited and we had to say goodbye to Salalah.

Each day here in Arabia we had temperatures in the 90s so coming back home to the elegant and beautiful Amsterdam and the pool is a joy.

Muscat, Oman—Largest City of the Sultanate of Oman

Day 81 at sea; March 27, 2011

Muscat and Mutrah, where we docked has been an important trading center between the east and west since the 1^st century. It is located on the Arabian Sea. Its current Sultan, Quaboos bin Sadi is said to be a benevolent dictator, who rules with an iron hand, but makes certain his people have everything they need. There are many beautiful mosques and the primary religion is Hindu. The port here is beautiful and as we sailed in, we saw ancient forts and lovely scultures. The sultan’s yacht is moored in the harbor and it looks like a small cruise ship. We took a shuttle from the port and were treated to a lovely waterfront with statues and gardens on one side and older buildings mostly restaurants and souks on the other. The shuttle dropped us off at the souk and we spent over an hour wandering around the maze of hundreds of cubbyhole shops with everything imaginable for sale.

Dubai—the Emerald City

Day 78 at sea, March 24, 2011

If Mumbai was the image of suffering, Dubai is the image of wealth and prosperity. The United Arab Emirates on the Persian Gulf. It is the most populated City in the UAE next to Abu Dhabi and continues to be one of the fastest growing cities in the world. The construction and development of Dubai is stunning. Dubai is home to the world’s tallest building. There is an amazing building that houses a mountain on which people can ski. The malls here are very high end and it isn’t unusual to see women, who still wear black berkas and cover their hair and face, buying stilettos and fashions right off the runway.

High-rises abound. One resort was built in the shape of a ship’s mast. The architecture here is unique and breathtaking. Most of the city is less than forty years old. Still in this beautiful and clean city, there are touches of the old world. An ancient walled fort, once home to a sheik, is now a museum featuring life as it was centuries ago. There are old-time markets or souks with pushy venders. We visited a gold souk, a spice souk and saw all manner of souvenirs, clothing, fabric and the like.

Most of Dubai’s population is made up of expatriates, the majority immigrants from Asia, who act as the primary workforce. Nationals are in the minority here. Dubai is one of seven emirates (kingdoms) still ruled by seven sheiks who are among the wealthiest rulers in the world. They have servants for all of their many palaces and yachts--ready at all times to serve. They are men who can afford many wives and children. Oil has made them wealthy as has our dependence on oil, but these sheiks know the oil is finite and are diversified. Tourism, desalinization, commerce, and brokerage also provide an income as well.

In fact we could learn from their desalinization process. They have only seawater and desert springs and use desalinization of ocean water for irrigation and even for drinking. Most people, however, use bottled water for drinking as there is still a higher than desirable salt content.

We took a tour in Dubai and enjoyed visiting the museum and art gallery, the beaches and seeing the buildings. All is not as shiny as it appears on the surface. Dubai is having financial problems and some of their most magnificent projects lay unfinished until such time the developers are once more able to get backing.

Mundai—Images of Suffering

Day 75 at sea; March 21, 2011

There are some beautiful old buildings and new high-rises and lovely hotels in Mumbai—for tourists and people with money. A yacht belonging to Kingfisher Airlines and Kingfisher Beer rests in the harbor—pristine and glowing white amidst the gray naval ships, the dirty degrading row-boats, ferries and tankers. The lovely buildings are protected by armed guards. In front of the Taj Mahal Hotel are armed guards and a military tank. Visitors must pass through a security gate and be screened before being allowed to enter. This is the hotel that fell victim to a terrorist attack about two years ago.

It sits near the water’s edge, a jewel surrounded by run-down market places and slums. Never have I seen such squalor. Millions of people live on the streets, they have no toilets and you can guess where they squat. Traffic? Think of the worst traffic you have ever driven in and multiply it by ten. I heard that Mumbai has the highest rate of traffic fatalities in the world. I believe it.

The first day I escorted the Panoramic Mundai tour. We saw all the highlights—remnants of British royalty. Cricket fields, new highways. The Taj. We saw Mumbai’s elite district. But woven through it all were hovels, people sleeping in the street, women—young girls really—holding babies and knocking on windows of cars, begging for rupees. No one stops to help. Day two we went out to hire a cab driver—men who surround you--all talking at once. We make a deal and off we go. He is an older man, he speaks decent English, but he is not happy. Perhaps he has been doing this for too long. He hopes we will stop at several of the markets where he gets a cut and buy something. He drives too fast. He argues that we have to buy something and tells us we have to go to one more shop. Ron is firm and tells him where we want to go, but the man stops at another market. Finally, we arrive again at the Taj for refreshments. He waits and guides us into another shop. We do look here because a friend recommended it. I don’t buy. I can’t find what I want in a price range I can afford. I don’t trust the quality.

Our driver is very unhappy with us because we have not made a purchase. We tell him we want to go back to the ship. It is nearly noon and we want to have lunch. He wants to know when the ship leaves. Ron tells him that if he hurries and gets us back right away he might be able to get another fare.

He takes a very long way around and mentions another shop. Again Ron tells him to return to the ship. I have a headache from the heat and the bickering. I think we have been driving in circles. Finally we reach one of the port gates. The driver asks for and takes Ron’s stamped card (with copy of passport which we need to renter. We’re a bit nervous as he parks and goes over to a guard station. Apparently he must show that he has a ship passenger in order to enter the gate. While we wait an old woman with a crutch knocks on the window. My heart aches and I have to close my eyes.

He comes back and we breathe again as he takes us to the gate—we show our cards and are allowed through. He drives too fast again—like a horse heading for the barn. I leave the cab and hurry into the terminal where I have to show my ID and card again. There are stalls in the terminal—jewelry, saris, tops, souvenirs. I look again as I did the day before. There are necklaces I like, but I am quoted $1200 US dollars and reminded that the stones are real rubies and emeralds, etc. I walk away and he tells me that he has one for $600. How do I know the stones are real? I don’t. I’m tired and hungry and sad.

Would I go back again to Mundai? Perhaps, but I have to process what I have seen. The pictures of poverty on television do not compare to the reality. In truth, I am happy to leave India behind.

Now we are off to Dubai where things are new. There is a mountain inside a building where one can ski for $60 an hour. Dubai is home to the tallest building in the world. There are shops and I have made plans to go with friends from the ship.

Kochi—a Near-Death Experience

Day 72 at sea; Mar 18, 2011

We were greeted by dancers and some rather interesting and colorful oversized plants. Since we didn’t get clearance from the ship until 11 am we decided to eat lunch before heading out. We had planned to hook up with another couple to share a cab, but alas, everyone had already gone. We finally decided to walk to the Taj Hotel which was 2 k away. We got as far as the port gate and were swarmed by cab and Tuc-Tuc drivers. One voice seemed to rise above the others and he offered to take us to the hotel for only one dollar. He was a very handsome young man and his tuc-tuc looked fairly new. Think golf cart with three wheels and a little more power.

Anyway we employed him for the ride and since we wanted to go the city to see a couple of sights, he insisted on being our driver. He waited for us at the Taj—a beautiful plush hotel on the water’s edge. Security guards and gates kept the poor of society out. The driver stayed outside the gate. We enjoyed the grounds and drinks in a lovely restaurant and eventually wandered back out.

Defir, our driver jumped up from where he’d been waiting with a number of other drivers and ran to get his tuc-tuc. This is where the excitement or should I say, terror, began. It took about forty minutes to get to St. Andrews church, our destination, and let’s just say that the worst you have heard about India is true. Garbage everywhere—smells like you wouldn’t believe. While there was a line down the middle of the road to separate traffic, no one seemed to pay any attention to it. Bikes, tuc-tucs, buses cars and people shared the narrow streets narrowly missing each other. We held on white knuckled as we passed hundreds of street vendors and beggars. The poorest of the poor. No wonder Mother Theresa had such a heart for India. It is painful to see this. You want to help so much, but we were told not to give anything to any of them or we would be swarmed and basically trapped. We were also told that some will fake injury or main themselves and even their children so that people will take pity on them and buy their wares or give them money for whatever purpose.

Past all of this we went as Defir proudly showed us the area where he lives with his wife and two children. He invited us to come to his place for tea, but we declined. (This is a ploy to get the tourist to give them more money. Our cab fare was whatever we wanted to pay.) We finally reached the church and after looking around and taking photos, we asked Defir to take us back to the ship. But first, he said, we had to stop at his brother’s shop—his uncle’s place, where his mother works and his wife and on and on. Ron had to firmly tell him over and over, no shopping—go straight to the ship. The “shops” lined the streets, where many of the people slept. The traffic was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. I had to close my eyes more than once, fearing we’d smash into something. It was terrifying at times as Defir honked his horn and came to with half an inch of a bike or bus or a person. A harrowing experience to say the least.

We finally arrived home and Defir let us off at the gate. He was not allowed inside the port area. He gave us a card so we could tell people coming out to hire him. Unfortunately for Defir, people were coming back to the ship, not going out. We paid him a little more than the going rate.

We are alive, have probably gained a few gray hairs, but I would hire a tuc-tuc again. I would spend a little more time seeing more of the sites—find a reputable market and not be so frightened. I would take a boat ride and explore the shore and I would spend some time in the country and maybe not so much in the city.

Now, we have another sea day before we dock in Mumbai (Bombay). Will it be more of the same? Worse? We shall see.

Raffles, home of the Singapore Sling

Day 67-68 at sea; March 13-14, 2011

Singapore

I spent the first few hours in Singapore working on my book. Then we went exploring. Took a cable car sky ride above the city that took us over to Sentosa Island which was a rather magical place. Views were spectacular. In addition to several parks, we hopped a tram and went from Beach Station through Merlion Park to Resort World which has Universal Studios, fabulous restaurants, a casino and convention center. HUGE complex. The parks were wonderful and I’ll post some pics on Facebook soon. There is a carving of the Merlion that is several stories high and has a number of water features at its base. These people know how to do parks.

BTW I posted some Hong Kong photos on FB the other day.

Singapore is a city and a state. While it adheres to British ways, it has Chinese, Hindu, Maylay, Islamic, Confucian, and Buddist elements. About 5 and ½ people live here. In early years, people were forced into certain areas—Chinese, Indians and Malaysians had their own territories which are still in place today as Little India and China Town. There are a number of Hindu and Chinese temples.

The laws in Singapore are very strict and enforced—there are a lot of rules. If one does not take care of their elderly parents, one could land in jail. Drug traffickers can expect a death sentence. There are no street people—everyone in Singapore has a home. The literacy rate is 93 percent. It is safe and it is clean—mostly. It is probably the busiest seaport in the world.

These people know how to build malls. We have nothing in comparison. I shopped and again bought nothing. Their idea of sizes here is small and extra small. J

I was to escort a tour on the second day, but my bus was cancelled so I went along with Marie, the watercolorist on hers to “learn the ropes.” It was a wonderful 4 hour tour and our guide had a good command of the English language, which is the primary language here. We went through Little India and saw a temple there and another in China Town. The highlight of the tour was a bumboat ride on the Singapore River. Lovely. At the end, we went to Raffles, a very old and expensive Hotel and the famous Long Bar where the Singapore Sling was invented. It’s a wonderful place and would be a fun place to stay if you could afford the $1000 per night rate. The drink costs $30, but ours was complimentary (included in the tour).

We had to be aboard by 1 pm and did make it back to the ship, but when I went to get my passport and my room card I discovered my room card was missing and I couldn’t get through security without it.

Totally embarrassed, I had to wait for someone from the ship to get me a new one. Marie was kind enough to wait for me. We ended up being a bit late boarding the ship, but others were behind us. I am so glad it wasn’t my passport. The day before A very sweet elderly lady lost her passport (or it was stolen), but they brought her through and took her to the US Embassy the next day to get a new one.

Finally, at 3 pm we sailed away, gazing in awe at this beautiful city. Oh, the skyline here is amazing. The Sands has a hotel Casino here that has a park on top. There is a structure—three skyscrapers with a ship on top than spans those three buildings. You have to see it to believe it. We left Singapore feeling as though we only scratched the surface. I want to come back and stay a week or two. I’d shop more in Little India, I’d eat at Bait, a world famous restaurant, I’d do the Zip Line—and so many other things to do and places to explore.

In the meantime, we are at sea for three days and then arrive in Kochi, India. Captain Olav gave us the sad news that due to the unrest in Egypt, we will not be stopping there. Instead, we will go to Israel. Some are disappointed. I am a little, but I’m excited to be wherever we are. J

Welcome to Phu My, Vietnam

Day 65 at sea, March 11, 2011

There is nothing here except a few stalls on the pier. The towns Ho Chi Minh City and Saigon are quite a distance. A number of people took tours, but it is 100 degrees and humid here so we passed. I’m sure it is beautiful here but I understand traffic is crazy. We’ll be in Singapore soon and I am delighted to announce that I will be escorting a tour. I’ll share details on that later, but it involves a trip on the river.

So, I am sitting on a lounge chair enjoying a slight breeze, sipping ice tea and taking the occasional plunge into the cool water. A number of fishing boats have sailed by along with tugs and cargo vessels. It’s quiet here. We have been joined by a grasshopper that’s big enough to toss on the grill and eat for dinner. J Actually he’s about 3-4 inches long. I think one of the servers made him disappear.

Last night we had a wonderful ventriloquist and very funny. Has entertained several presidents at the Kennedy Center and elsewhere. He talked about how as a kid he learned to throw his voice and make his mother crazy. He made his year-old brother talk. He’d get out of school by having the PA system call him to the principle’s office. Some really cute stuff.

This evening we have a lovely lady named Eve. And for dinner we have Vietnam specialty foods.

I’m getting caught up on classes and working on the book today. Sail away is at 5:30 this evening and then we have a day at sea, then Singapore.

Leaving Hong Kong

Day 62 at sea, March 8, 2011

Our second day in Hong Kong was not what I had hoped. Ron left to explore on his own and I had the bright idea of walking to the ladies market 45 minutes away. The streets of Hong Kong are not easy to maneuver. Many of them have no pedestrian crossings and one must go underground. I walked around, fearful of tunnels. I learned later that the tunnels are so clean you can eat off the floors. Very safe. So I walked miles out of my way and went into a few shops. Shops, my foot. This is where they have all the runway fashions that regular folks can’t or don’t wear and cost more than a car. I wonder how many such shops can survive but then one sale in any given day would likely pay their salaries for a month.

I came back to the ship for lunch and met up with Ron. He talked about riding across the bay on the ferry and walking a covered bridge to another shopping mall. BTW there are more Starbucks here than in Seattle. Hopefully I will see Hong Kong again and I’ll know better where to go.

We arrived back on the ship in time for me to sit in the hot tub for a bit and soothe my aching body. After dinner the Chinese cultural center entertained us with music, dance and a wonderful changing faces artist. A dance troupe of your people did the dragon dance with a magnificent multicolored dragon that glowed in the dark. The kids each held one or two sticks and maneuvered around the stage with exact precision to make the dragon twist and turn. Amazing. We also had two lovely girls do a ribbon dance.

After that we enjoyed another light show and all too soon came the sail away party. It was Mardi Gras so we all got beads and music. At ten pm we undocked and sailing out to sea we were mesmerized by the city lights. It’s impossible, I think, to explain but imagine thousands upon thousands of high rises some apartments with lights some without against a nearly dark sky. I have never seen a more beautiful city. I would have loved another day there.

But we must look again to Viet Nam and crossing the South China Sea. We’ll have two days there as well. In the meantime we have two sea days and I must teach.

Hong Kong: City of Lights

Day 61 at sea; March 7, 2011

Oh, my. Like Sydney, Hong Kong is a beautiful port to sail into. We have the primo dock as everything is so close. There is a shopping center that you have to go through before you can even get to the street. Mostly high end stores and it goes on forever—four levels.

We arrived at around 6 am. The city was a study in gray. Hazy mountains butting up against thousands of skyscrapers. A waterway separates us from the mainland and ferries shuttle people back and forth.

We have a tour this morning at 8 so after being enthralled with our arrival, we ate breakfast and ducked into our room to get ready. The tour promised highlights of Hong Kong. We expected cloudy skies and around 60 degree temps, but the sun came out and the weather was absolutely perfect.

Our tour guide, Richard, his business name is Chinese and very talkative. We learned much about the city and its pluses and minuses. We went through a tunnel and through the city to a small harbor where we boarded Sampans for a trip through the harbor. We passed a lovely floating restaurant and hundreds of boats from junks to yachts and everything in between. We learned that Hong Kong builds highrises because there is very little room for them to build because of the mountains. So they go up. 7.7 million people live in Hong Kong, but because they don’t have strict immigration laws, the actual number is much higher.

We were then taken into an industrial part of town where craftsmen designed and made jewelry, then left to browse for half an hour. The jewelry was lovely but far beyond my budget. How nice of them to also include a room full of costume jewelry with affordable prices. I didn’t buy. I am looking for a carved rose jade necklace.

From there we went to Stanley Market. We bypassed the stalls and went to the harbor, which was lovely. A long boardwalk, a temple and a museum. We walked around and headed back to the shops and stalls. One woman had a vast assortment of lovely women’s clothes, neatly displayed. I was temped to get something there, but we were only given an hour. I may go back tomorrow. Or I may just go to the ladies market and the jade market, which are closer to the ship. A long walk though. I’ll take my time or take a taxi.

For the most part the city is very clean and unlike Manila you don’t see a lot of poor people in the streets. That doesn’t mean they are not there. We are warned not to wear jewelry or carry bags containing anything we would not want to lose. Also, some merchants have been known to substitute your purchase with a rock or charge your account more than once. Never let your card out of sight.

Our tour took us past beautiful coves and scenic view of their many beaches. Most of the beaches are protected from sharks by nets, but our tour guide said that people are still wary because a number of people were killed by sharks (6, I think) prior to using the nets.

We arrived at our final adventure—a shopping mall near the top of Mt. Victoria were we used facilities, ate. Ron and I grabbed our usual Starbucks. It was a lovely mall and I’d have liked to shop there, but we were there to take a cable car down the mountain. We started at the peak—above most of the skyscrapers and creaked our way down the mountain—backwards. Going up, people sit facing forward. A very steep incline or decline depending on your point of view.

Once the ride ended, we boarded the bus again and headed back to the ship. We ate and off we went to the mall at the pier. I browsed the stores, cringing at the prices and wondering how they all stay in business. Ron went off to do his thing and we met up again at dinner.

As darkness settled over the city we were treated to the most colorful display of lights from the buildings downtown. From 8 to 8:15 a spectacular light show complete with lasers and all manner of colorful lights entertained us.

Tomorrow we get to explore on our own. I expect to do a fair amount of walking.

Manila: City of Many Faces

Day 58 at Sea; March 4, 2011

The people welcomed the boat with a band and dancers. The works. I worked on the manuscript GP and around 10 took a break to go into town. Manila is not my favorite port. It's dirty and smelly and going into town was sad--real poverty here. There are many children on the street.

We caught a shuttle to one of the biggest shopping malls in the world. Maybe on par with Mall of America in Minnesota, but I think this one was bigger. Robinson's Plaza. Many restaurants. Lots of high end stores. Most geared for teenagers. Robinsons is by far the largest store I have ever seen in my life. The shoe department along was about the size of Texas—okay, maybe not quite as big.

We had Starbucks coffee and shopped a until my legs ached. I got lost three times. There must have been a couple hundred security guards in and around the mall itself. Also on the streets. We saw a lot of strange looking jeep busses called Jeepnys. Open air. Very warm and humid here. We have about 200 crew members who have families here—many got to bring their families on board so we had lots of smiles and joyful hearts.

Though the town itself was not impressive, the people are great. About 50 children from an orphanage came and performed for us. So adorable. We presented them with $6000. The mayor of Manila had grown up in the orphanage and spoke for a short time.

We had a sail away party at 5 and the band played again. What a goodbye. We took on a number of new crew members lost others. Many stayed and were thankful for the extra time here, but sad to have to say goodbye so soon.

Two Sea days and Another Formal Night

Day 57 at sea; March 3, 2011

Yesterday was another day of sailing. I worked and taught and was invited to have dinner with one of my students. She is an amazing person with a colorful past like many of the people on board. She has written a children’s book—self published. Oh the stories she has. I’m encouraging her to write her memoirs. We had complimentary wine with dinner—to make up for not stopping at Palau. Since she has late dinner seating, I ended up going to the 10 pm show—a wonderful master guitarist. Francis Diatschenko from Australia. We are so privileged to be entertained by artists from all over the world.

Today (day 57 at sea) we had a silent art auction to raise money for the Hospicio de San Jose, the first welfare agency in the Philippines. The paintings were done by the watercolor students here on board and the auction raised $1600. Watercolor classes are offered twice a day on sea days. I have not been able to take advantage of them as the timing hasn’t worked for me.

$10,000 so far has been donated for the Red Cross to help earthquake victims in Christchurch. We’ll be sending that in on the 6^th.

We have another formal night tonight and Ron doesn’t want to go again. I don’t blame him in a way as the dinners are rather long. He got up at four am this morning to run. So he gets up way too early for me. I tell him he can do what he wants, but I am going to the formal dinner. I rather enjoy them. We have Tamara Guo “A Superstar Throughout Asia and a Singing Sensation” is performing tonight. In the Queen’s Lounge. Then later at ten is the Royalty Ball. I don’t know who is reigning, but will probably go for a bit to see what’s happening. If I can stay awake.

The Half Way Mark

Day 55 at sea; March 1, 2011

Has it really been 55 days? Are we really halfway through our incredible journey? Today is a sea day and I wrote six pages in my novel. I had my class share stories and impressions of their time in Madang. I wish we had a copy of the Writer’s Market here on the ship. Next time, if there is a next time, I will have one with me.

We are rocking and rolling on the semi-rough sea and the pool is like a wild waves feature. A nice cool breeze keeps the temperature and humidity tolerable. I have enjoyed almost two hours out here on deck. It’s almost dinnertime so I’ll need to go in and get ready.

Looking forward to Manila and Hong Kong and Viet Nam. In Hong Kong I hope to go shopping for dancing shoes.

Crossing the Equator—Again

Day 54 at sea; February 28, 2011

King Neptune and his redheaded mermaid visited the ship today in a time honored tradition. The entire ship celebrated the event with free equator slings, music and sacrificing of the ship’s staff to ensure safe passage. A huge fish—real one was mounted of a stand and each staff member had to kiss the fish as part of their punishment. They also had to endure being sprayed with gooey stuff and then thrown into the pool. It was quite a party.

Otherwise we had an average sea day. I taught my class and went to the HAL Chorale rehearsal—we are doing a medley of 15 Rogers & Hammerstein show tunes. After that I went to a cocktail party by invitation from the Cruise Specialists from Seattle. They have about 300 people on board who booked through them and I learned that they are the ones to book a cruise with. Lots of perks and good value. During the party, the captain came on and told us we wouldn’t be able to stop in Palau. As an alternative we will stay in Manila for two days. Many of the crewmembers are from Manila and were ecstatic as they will have an overnight. Several stopped serving to do a little gig. Most of us are not too disappointed, though I was looking forward to meeting a friend’s friend.

Our entertainment tonight is Paul Fredericks, a Brit who sang with the band that did Winchester Cathedral. He was great. He’ll be back tonight along with the magician comedian in a variety show. Set clocks back another hour. What time is it anyway? I do know it’s Sunday because the elevator rug tells me so. Off to bed at 9 which was really 8 because we crossed another time zone tonight.

Madang, Papua New Guinea

Day 53 at Sea; February 27, 2011

Rainy, but warm. Very warm—and humid. Madang is the capital of Papua New Guinea. As we came off the ship and walked out into the town we were met by hundreds of children and adults smiling and waving, greeting us as if we were rock stars. Most of the adult men and women had red teeth, stained from drinking a Beetle Nut concoction. Startling to see. Of course this is how Bloody Mary got her name. Many had set up mats on which they displayed handmade items to sell.

I was walking with Sharon and Allan, a couple who are well traveled. Ron had gone on an excursion so I was left to wander around town. The unpaved streets were muddy and full of ruts. A family of ten: An older man, one of his two wives and ten children followed us for several blocks. They left us when he discovered we had no Beetle Nuts and had nothing to give him. The people didn’t beg. They were very friendly, but they did walk expectantly beside people. The town’s natural beauty—lush and green and tropical made up for the trash, the police presence, the run-down buildings and the obvious poverty.

The volcanic region is in the Pacific Ring of Fire and has many high peaks and active volcanoes. There are some resorts and a hotel. Many of the houses are built on stilts. We walked to the war memorial along the botanical gardens and back into town. The humidity totally zapped me so I could hardly wait to get back to the ship. Again people were very nice and willing to help. There were very few street signs so our map did us very little good. Very little had been done here as far as building goes since WWII allied forces took the island over from the Japanese. What little building that was done happened mainly in coastal towns after the war. The town was destroyed and many killed in the heavy fighting here between Japanese and allied troops.

Despite the friendly smiles, there is a sort of sadness here that maybe comes with the advent of modern times into a land whose people hold to the old ways and are stuck in between. The digital age has arrived here, but you don’t see as many cell phones as you do ads for digicel and the internet experience.

Ron had a better experience as he was asked to escort a tour up into the mountains. There are still tribes here that adhere to their old customs. Pigs are the primary currency and women are a commodity. A man can have as many as he wants, and usually trades in pigs.

Children and adults came out to the ship on whatever floats and lingered there as passengers tossed them gifts of shirts, candy. They would dive from their broken-down crafts, canoes, dugouts. For me it was bitter sweet—they were so happy to have something—anything. At the same time I wondered how much happier they might have been if they had never been exposed to life in modern world.

Sailing on again—in luxury wondering what will happen to these people—hoping that in time, since there is no going back, that life can be better.

Day 51 and 52 at Sea; February 25& 26, 2011

I hope everyone is following this journey on a map. Today, the 26^th, we awoke to find island after island on both sides of the Ship. We passed through the China Sea, the Coral Sea and are now in the Solomon Sea. We are winding our way north to Papua New Guiney.

Our entertainment tonight was award winning Concert Pianist Tomono Kawamura and she was magnificent. Our entertainers the last few times have been mediocre—so-called comics and magicians –performers who seem to have gone to the same school of comedy. Tomono was a breath of fresh air.

The Rain In Cairns Falls Mainly on the Tourists

Day 50 at sea; February 24, 2011

Cairns is a lovely seaport. Ron went on a tour to see the highlights and ride a gondola over the rainforest. And what a rainforest it was. He had a wonderful attitude—unlike some of the grumps who sounded as though the rain would turn them into toads. The temp was supposed to be in the 80s but the rain cooled things down to a bearable temp.

When Ron came back to the ship, we ate lunch and headed out. The ship provides clear umbrellas and we walked off the ship, through customs and into a park, along the waterfront to the casino. We played a while and walked back to the ship, in the terminal on our way into the ship, we sampled all kinds of wonderful fruit—compliments of Cairn’s townsfolk and listened to a bit of folk music.

After dinner, we went back out and talked twenty minutes to the “Night Market” to do some browsing for souvenirs. There were a lot of interesting stalls and reasonable prices, but I wasn’t in the buying mood. On the way back to the ship we stopped at Woolworths (like Target) and picked up hairspray and such. We had rain on and off—nothing major all the while we were out until…. About four blocks from the ship, the heavens opened and it poured. Even with umbrellas or because of them, we were soaked from the waist down. What fun. We came back and changed and spent some time at the Piano before heading to bed.

2 Party Days at Sea—Sailing Inside the Great Barrier Reef

Day 48 & 49 at Sea; February 23-24, 2011

I have lumped these two sea days together because they are one big party. We have the CEO from Holland America on board and he is being wined and dined. It is also Mariner Appreciation Days—honoring people to sail often with Holland America and are considered Mariners. Tuesday I had my class and shared my two cents on writing creative non-fiction. At 4:15 we had a cocktail party and people could talk their pictures with the CEO. Complimentary drinks. Then we had a formal dinner and it was oh so fine.

Unfortunately, I had an episode with angina and ended up in the infirmary for a couple of hours. My enzymes were normal, but the doc was going to send me to a hospital in Cairnes for further tests. Fortunately, the primary doc came in and since I have a history of these and have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, she told me I could go to my cabin and sleep and they would repeat the blood work and EKG in the am. She was able to contact my doctor’s office in Vancouver. I am fine this morning.

Second day the staff is getting ready for a huge party—A Taste of Austrailia. Austrailian musicians on board, wine, food of all kinds including crocodile, kangaroo and emu, wonderful large cherries, and other delectable things. I ended my class early so we could all go hear the CEO talk about the future of the HAL cruise line.

At five, the Lido opened and people poured in, stewards poured wine and beer and other stuff. An absolutely amazing party. Too much noise and way too hot.

On a more interesting note, we are sailing inside the Great Barrier Reef where waters are calmer and temperatures are tropical. It’s been raining, but who cares. Tomorrow when we awake we will be in Cairnes.

February 21, 2011; 47^th Day at Sea

We are at a sail away party with free wine and champagne. It’s with a certain sadness and joyfulness that we sail away. It would have been nice to be here in Syndey a bit longer, but we’ll be at sea for two days and arrive in another Austrailian Port, Cairns.

Entering Syndney Harbour

February 22, 2011; 46^th Day at Sea

It’s said that Syndney, Austrailia has the most beautiful harbor in the world. I have not seen many harbors—well actually quite a few on this trip—but I would have to agree. The sight of the opra house and the city coming into view brought tears to my eyes.

We awoke early and were out on the decks at 6 am to hear the travelogue from our onshore expert telling us about the harbor. The sun began to rise and provided us with magnificent colors and cloud formations. We must have taken a hundred or more photos and each turn, each inlet, each view was more spectacular than the last.

We pulled up and docked at the overseas terminal located just a stone’s throw away from the famed opra house off out port side. We walk off the ship and are in The Rock District. The walk along the water is wide and beautifully appointed.

We were within walking distance of the Botanical Garden and the large weekend market at the Rock and lots of other places to see. Our first day was very warm and humid. I had two trips back to the ship to refresh and change. We walked past the ferry terminal and along the harbor where the opera house sits. Lots of restaurants with outside seating. With it being Sunday, artisans had a large street fair with their stalls. Some lovely things.

After lunch, I walked to the opera house and the botanical gardens. I walked up past the library which is phenomenal and down through a series of courtyards where the subway has stations. I was pleasantly surprised to find a Lindt (as in my favorite chocolates) café with outside tables and umbrellas. I resisted buying the chocolates because they’d have melted before I went a block. Still, it was fun to see it. I also passed a Prada shop or salon—or whatever it was called. And several brand named stores that unfortunately were closed. J This wonderful courtyard lasted for about 8 blocks and then I turned to go down George Street to the art fair and the ship.

Last night was lovely and cooler. After seeing Date Night with Tina Fey, I listened to Diane for a bit, then walked around outside, enjoying the lights of the harbor and the city in the background.

My legs have yet to forgive me, but I shall abuse them further tomorrow.

Sea Day and Time for Singing

No class today—we have a guest talent show and the HAL singers of which I am one of about fifty, are performing this afternoon.

What a fun day. It was nice to be at sea without having to work. Well, I did work on my book, but not on class.

We went to a movie rather than the entertainment tonight. Bounty Hunter with Jennifer Aniston. Kind of cute—romantic comedy and adventure. There is a movie available every night in the Wywang Theater. We usually take in the show, but I might be becoming a movie fan.

Port Arthur, Austrailia’s Premier Convict Site

Feb 18, 2011; Day 44 at sea

We awoke in Carnarvon Bay this morning and used tenders to go ashore.

Port Arthur operated as a prison colony from 1830 to around 1877. A complete community was built up around the prison. Today many of the original buildings are in ruin, but some have survived. The stonework, done primarily by prisoners still remains intact. Tours are available to the Island of the dead where an estimated 1100 people (townspeople and prisoners) were buried. Many of the prisoners were repeat offenders, but many too were young men whose only crime was stealing a bit of food. One boy was only 9 years old.

The visitor’s center is most impressive and contains an amazing museum depicting life in the prison and the rehabilitation done there. Many of the prisoners learned crafts and trades and were eventually released.

The site receives around 250,000 visitors a year and it’s easy to see why. The grounds here are beautiful. I was especially impressed with the church. Prisoners had created beautiful woodwork, but an accident caused it to burn down. What remains is a stone exterior. I took a number of photos. It’s a haunting place and is said to be haunted. In April 1966 a gunman went on a shooting spree and took the lives of 35 people and wounded another 19 in and around the historic site. The man is in prison serving 35 life sentences.

I worked this morning until noon and then went out to walk around the site. What an experience. We arrived back on the ship at 2:30 and I’m writing.

Soon Sydney!!! I understand that port is right by the opera house. I can’t wait.

The Little Devils

Hobart, Tasmania

Day 43 at Sea; February 18, 2011

Used to be that whenever I thought of Tasmania, I’d think of that wild nasty Tasmanian Devil from the old Bugs Bunny cartoons. No more. Now I think of Hobart and the beautiful harbor and St. David’s Park, and the amazing old buildings built by the original settlers—prisoners for the most part.

Today it is a lovely city and I will think of the yarn stores and the luscious Australian woolens and yarns. My friend Pat nearly bought out the store. She bought some of that wonderful yarn to spin and more yarn to make up sweaters and such.

I will think of the fascinating and adorable photo of a baby Tasmanian Devil sleeping in the palm of its caregiver’s hand. Sadly, they are endangered as a disease has spread through their population and killed so many. I will try not to think of them as nasty little creatures that can rip your face off—unless that is I come face to face with one in the wild. J

We left Hobart last night at midnight. Unfortunately, I missed the sailing as I was sound asleep. Next stop Port Arthur.

I am a great grandmother again. Adalia Rose was born on Feb 16, in Fargo, North Dakota at 3:20 am. She is 19 in and 7lbs 1.8 oz. Hannah is doing well and looks great.

We had a formal dinner and a valentine ball. After dinner I had intended to take in the ball, but went to bed and slept 12 hours. Seas have been rough since we left the Fiordlands and are crossing the Tasmanian Sea. Yesterday I was so tired—groggy from sleeping so long, I guess) I fell asleep with my hands on the keyboard. I got nothing done except to sign up to sing at Diane’s open mike at go to a nice lunch with Diane (our piano broad) I had to stay awake for the open mike which happened at 9 pm. I did a couple songs. Blew one since it was in the wrong key. Once adjusted it went okay. It’s been too long since I’ve sung in public.

Today is another day at sea and I hope to work on the book this morning.

I’ve had trouble getting on the internet the last couple of days.

More on the Fiordlands

What an unbelievable tour. We went into three different sounds today and each was more beautiful than the last. High mountains lots of trees, waterfalls from recent rains. Small tour boats, canoes. A couple of little settlements accessible only by boat. Similar to upper Lake Chelan only more scenic. The ship came very close to some of the areas and everyone was out on the deck taking photos like crazy. It looked like there was barely enough room to turn around in the sounds.

By the end of the day everyone was elated and in a great mood.

Cruising in Fiordland National Park

Day 40; Monday February 14, 2011

We rounded the southern tip of New Zealand and are sailing along the west coast.

Today is a scenic cruise day along the waterways of Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound. Most of the area in uninhabited and is a wildlife preserve it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. We’re traveling along one of the most beautiful parks in the world. The park covers around 10% of New Zealand with many islands, mountains. Glaciers carved the area around 15,000 years ago.

This area is magnificent. I may have to stop working this morning so I can take it all in.

Since we are not docked or going to shore, today is considered a sea day for us and consequently, I will have a class at two. It’s Valentine’s Day today and we have another formal night along with a ball in the Queen’s Lounge.

From here we sail north to Tasmania so we have two more days at sea. More adventures to come.

Oban at Halfmoon Bay

Day 39: Sunday February 13, 2011

Finally we are at Oban—a very small, quaint community of around 300 people. It’s very hilly. We climbed up a steep hill and down the other side to get to the town. For part of it we hiked along Fuchsia Track or trail that could have been in the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. The town is a popular vacation spot among locals and the really neat thing is that 85% of this island is protected and can never be built on. It was cool and damp and really reminded me of

Day 38; Saturday Feb. 12, 2011

I Lied… I thought last blog we’d be going to Oban, but I missed our actual next stop. Dunedin is situated at the head of Otago Harbour and has a Scottish flavor. It is the home of Cadbury Chocolates. Archeologists believe it was a multi moa-hunter site around 1100 ACE. Captain James Cook spotted penguins and seals in this area. The area was settled by Scotts and founded as Dunedin (Du`n E`ideann), the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh.

We arrived on the one day of the year when the townspeople put on a major street festival. It went on for blocks and blocks and so many people you could hardly move among them. There must have been a 1,000 or more booths or stalls. I was surprised to see how green and lovely this place is. More vegetation here than at our last stop. I’m reminded of the Northwest. Tauranga, New Zealand – to Christchurch

Day 34 at Sea; February 8, 2011

Tauranga is located in the western part of the Bay of Plenty and is an absolutely wonderful island. One entire side—the ocean side is a surf beach—lovely cream-colored sand with shells. I wish we could have stayed longer, but for the next few ports, it’s in and out the same day. Maunganui is a Maori phrase meaning big hill and Mt. Maunganui is a large hill—an extinct volcano. They’d had slides recently, so it was closed to the public.

The shuttle took us into a nice downtown area with a lot of shops. However, the prices are fairly steep. There are a lot of little clothing shops featuring garments made by the designers. Interesting. Most things were not exactly tailored for my shape and style. Naturally, I stopped at a Starbucks for my venti mocha frapaccino light. J

The island is known for its Kiwi (bird and fruit). They also have items made out of Merino wool.

Next Stop Napier

Day 35 at sea; February 9, 2011

Thin Art Deco. Napier is located in Hawk’s Bay; it’s a tourist town with lovely parks and shopping. An earthquake not only leveled it back in 1931, it raised some 40 square km of land from below sea level. There are many art deco buildings that have been restored and renewed. Wine is one of New Zealand’s most popular exports and some of their wines are considered the best in the world. The earthquake also took away their sandy beaches and left black rock. Well, I suppose you can’t have it all.

Napier is compared to South Beach, Miami, Florida as two best art deco towns in the world. The town was named for Sir Charles Napier, a British war hero.

Welcome to Wellington

Day 36 at sea; February 10, 2011

Oh, my, what a gorgeous town. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand. It is the southernmost capital city in the world. It’s known as windy Wellington and today was no different, but we were blessed with unseasonably warm weather—it was perfect. The city has more hills than San Francisco. Many of the homes build on the side of the hills have their own cable cars to transport then from the lower roads.

I went on tour after lunch. We drove along the waterfront and then made out way up to the highest point in Wellington and had a great panoramic view. Had to climb several flights to the top, but well worth it. We went by one of the sites where Lord of the Rings was filmed. Fascinating.

We then took a cable car from downtown up a very steep him to the botanical gardens. Wish we’d had more time there, but the bus met us at the top and we went into the gardens to the Rose gardens and Begonia house. Gorgeous. Probably as spectacular as our Portland Rose Gardens, but the begonia house was awesome. I bought a 6 ounce coke for $4.00 ($2.80) our money.

Wellington is one place I’d like to spend more time exploring. Our bus got us back to the pier four minutes before we had to be back aboard. I changed for dinner and managed to get to the dining room just in time. Gotta eat.

The Amazing Christchurch, New Zealand

Day 37; February 11, 2011

We docked in Lyttelton. Ron had a tour today to the Antarctic Expedition. They had a fantastic trip (virtual) to Antarctica and even felt the water from the penguins shaking off the water. They created wind and fog and snow and weather about like my family experience in North Dakota, but not as cold.

I took the 30 minute shuttle into town to Cathedral Square. Every city should have one of these. The cathedral is very old and very beautiful. The Avon River runs through the town and there are a number of lovely parks and walks. I went to the art museum and the art center with all New Zealand artists. There was even a quilt shop. J I totally enjoyed the outing.

It’s definitely getting colder. The topography has changed a lot—sort of like traveling from Portland/Vancouver to The Dalles. Here in Christchurch it’s been in the 60s with a rather cool wind. I’m on Lido deck having to use a blanket.

Tomorrow we head further south to the southernmost part of New Zealand to Stewart Island and Oben at Halfmoon Bay. It will be like the temp in Alaska. I may stay on the boat. J

Day 2, Auckland

Day 33, February 7, 2011

I worked for a while this morning and after lunch, Ron and I walked up Queen Street to a Starbucks, then to the Skycity—think Seattle’s Space Needle only with 5 restaurants, a hotel and a two story casino at the base. At the top, people can skywalk or bungie jump or just look at the view. Ron and I didn’t do any of those since the cost is pretty hefty. We did walk around and then made our way back to the ship.

At the moment I am lounging by the pool, ready to take another dip. Tonight we are dining at the Italian restaurant so we can watch the ship sail away from Auckland. out Hauraki Gulf, through the Colville Channel with the great Barrier Island on our portside. We sail into the Bay of Plenty on a southerly course and arrive at Tauranga in the morning.

Excuse me while I take another dip in the pool to cool off. J

Ahhh. Much better.

Tonight we’re entertained by Jeff Stevenson, a British Comedian. Just so you know, a couple of nights ago Peter Cousins from Australia gave a stunning performance the night before last. He’s amazing and has played major roles in several big stage productions, one being the lead in Phantom of the Opera in London for around 200 performances.

Auckland, New Zealand

Day 32 at Sea, February 6, 2011

It’s about 75 degrees here and very humid. Warmer than usual. Auckland is known as the Queen City or City of Sails. It’s home to about a quarter of the country’s people. There are around 4.3 million people here and 45 million sheep. Of course here in Auckland we don’t see any of those sheep., but we are making our way south so I expect to see more farmland. We are moored in the most beautiful harbor. Funny thing though—we are right beside a Hilton Hotel and can see right into the rooms. Not that we’re looking. Imagine going to bed overlooking the harbor and waking up to a line of people at the ship’s railing, peering at you.

Today Ron and I took the city highlights tour and drove to several interesting places. Among them was Auckland’s fabulous museum. Spectacular. We spent an hour there experiencing New Zealand history from the Maori people, native to this island. We also saw the bones from archeological digs and history through the war. One of the ancient canoes used in battle (Maori people fought one another a lot), made from one tree was hollowed out and held 100 warriors.

From the museum we went up to a volcano and could see all of Auckland from the top. When the tour ended, we had lunch on the ship, then went to explore the Westfield Shopping Center. Believe it or not, we have Westfield Shopping Center in Vancouver, Washington,, reminding me that we are in Western civilization. Sad to leave our beautiful Polynesian islands in a way, but so much more excitement to come.

Our show tonight featured Maori natives in a folkloric presentation. Interesting, but I was so tired I could hardly stay awake. So goodnight. More tomorrow.

The History of Bingo

Day 31 at Sea, February 5, 2011

We are at sea again. Our newspaper, which we get everyday didn’t have a lot to say today. The headline is “The History of Bingo”. The bingo game can be traced back to a lottery game called “LoGiuoco Code Loto,” played in Italy in the early 1500s.

We also learned about the Bulbous Bow. The bulbous bow is the torpedo shape part of the ship’s hull. It protrudes out of the bow just below the waterline and water is forced to flow over it. It then creates a trough by the V shape of the bow. Basically it reduces the vessel’s wake thus giving more energy to the forward motion of the ship. It also helps with fuel efficiency.

Now aren’t you happy to hear that! J I actually love days at sea because I’m fairly productive and I get to teach my class. I usually get some time at the pool and then it’s time for dinner.

I’ll try to send more of this useful info soon, but we are in port for 8 days in a row in different ports in New Zealand.

Nuku’ Alofa, Tonga

Feb 3, 2011, Day 29 at sea

We went to sleep on Feb 1 and woke up in Tonga on Feb. 3.

Tonga is nearly flat—no lava domes or high peaks. The Island is lush and fertile allowing for the growth of those wonderful tropical plants.

Ron had a tour this morning and I was on my own. I hooked up with Diane the pianist, but since she didn’t want to take the free bus into the market place, we parted ways. I didn’t do any shopping, but hooked up with two other couples to hire Peror who charged us each $20 to give us a two hour tour. We had a nice time but wished Diane could have come with me. She ended up finding Ella, a taxi cab driver and wished I had come with her. Next time. J

Saw a bunch of blow holes on the rocky shore; Huge bats that hang from the trees in daylight and fly at night. Saw spiders with inch long bodies and very long legs—non-poisonous. Went past a wedding and a funeral—lots of cemeteries since they cannot bury their dead, but must build tombs in graveyards or in their yards.

Tonga used to export primarily coconuts, but now their main crop is pumpkins which they sell to Japanese. The beautiful plants and trees are cleared for pumpkins and the farmers use pesticides. Sad. But it brings in money. Many of the Tongans go overseas for jobs and send money home to the family.

It’s very hot and humid, but often we have a breeze to cool us down. I’m loving it. The islands are great to see, but I’m always happy to get back to the boat and into the pool. J

Last night we had a Dutch dinner and celebrated the Chinese New Year and our loss of a day.

Whatever Shall We Do Without Ground Hog's Day

Day 28 at Sea—February 1, 2011

We docked at Alofi, Niue this morning. It’s a town of about 600 people. It’s a lovely island. Lots of reefs. From the dock we could see parrot fish and those yellow striped guys. There were a number of caved and the cliff-side near the dock was stunning. At the top of the hill was a church overlooking the water and a beautiful little cemetery with very old tombstones. One looked as if it had a lace cloth on it, but it, of course, was concrete. Fresh flowers decorated many of the tombs.

In these islands, families own land and it is passed from generation to generation. Many of the families bury their deceased in tombs in their front yards.

People of the village brought their crafts and wares to town simply because we were there. I understand there is a prison on the island (we didn’t go on a tour) but there are no prisoners. The people were lovely and friendly.

It was drippy humid there so I’m glad we went in early. Once back on board, I spent the rest of the day on Lido deck getting in and out of the pool and enjoying a wonderful breeze.

An amazing thing happens tonight. We go through a time warp. It is Feb 1 and tomorrow when we wake up it will be Feb 3. Yes, we lose an entire day. In actuality, we are crossing the International Date Line.

Rarotonga, Cook Islands

January 29, 2011; Day 26 at sea

Today is an at sea day again. I prepare for class and work. My class is at 2 pm every sea day. I joined the HAL Chorale today and we meet at 4 pm on sea days.

January 30; Day 27 at sea

We arrived in Rarotonga , Cook Islands and are waiting for tenders to take us to shore. Seas are rough, but able bodied people will be allowed to go in. Our tender liked bouncing away from the boat while loading passengers. We made it to shore safely and since it’s Sunday most stores are closed. Most people go to one of the many churches on the island. We took a tour bus $10 each and got a wonderful tour around the island. They grow everything imaginable here—esp fruits. Wonderful fruits.

There are around 17,000 on the island—lots of beautiful resorts. It’s very green with lots of sandy beaches. There is no road crossing the island, only two buses running clockwise and counter clockwise. Our driver took us inland to show us the crops and farms. An amazing tour.

We were back on the ship by lunchtime and I spend the rest of the day lounging by the pool and working with photos. Another time change. Set clocks back again. We will soon lose an entire day. In fact, we will have no ground hog day. Whatever shall we do?

We are currently heading in a northwesterly direction on our way to Alofi.

Bora Bora -- Ahhhhh...

Day 23-24, January 27-28

Bora Bora. Now this is living. Unbelievably beautiful. Water goes from royal blue to turquoise to lagoon green depending on the depth. The ship is anchored in the harbor and tenders take us back and forth to shore. Yesterday we went into town—dusty and not so clean, but the water…. Ah. Some tourist shops. They are known for their black pearls, but I didn’t succumb. Nothing called my name. J My cold is still a bother, but I’m still keeping on. Today I went on a tour and we drove around the island in a converted truck bed. The “bus” had real a/c—windows open. Flowers decorated each window. So many beautiful sights on the way. We stopped where a family makes crafts and saw them dying their cotton fabrics. They are dyed and laid out in the sun to dry with cut out pieces of linoleum on the cloth which removes some of the paint. Fun. We continued up the mountain through several small towns. Past several resorts with those thatched huts that extend out into the water. Would love to visit one of these some day. But I’m happy to go back to the ship. Our last stop was at Bloody Mary’s Restaurant. Polynesian. James Michener created the character and it was made famous in South Pacific. I got back to the ship around 12:30—just in time for lunch.

Immediately put on my swimsuit and have been out on the deck all afternoon. Soon time for dinner. Captain Olav has just told us we are leaving this beautiful place. The ultimate tropical paradise.

We’ll be at sea two days and then in a port I can’t pronounce. More on that later.

Tahiti Paradise

Day 22, January 26

We are docked in Tahiti. Quite a lovely island. We were greeted by natives –Polynesian music and drums. We went across the street to an ATM machine. There are no stop lights. You have to just step into the street (rush hour traffic) and pray they stop. We went back by the dock and walked along the water through a part. Nice. It’s expensive here. A bottle of sun tan lotion cost 30 dollars. We didn’t buy it. It’s very warm here. Ron walked on the the cultural center and I want back to the local market and then to the ship. I was going to buy one of those cotton cloths that you tie into a dress or skirt, but the fabric is a cheap cotton and they wanted too much for them. I spent the rest of the day lazing by the pool and working in my rewrite for the GP book.

We left just after sundown and the lights from the city were gorgeous on the water.

Day 20 at Sea, January 24

One day at sea is like another. Restful. Lots of time for writing and preparing for my class. Lots of people watching. Did I tell you about the high numbers of severely disabled people on board and elderly folks. A man died—only 59. Very sad. I only know because of Doc. Imagine, a boat load of people over 80 and a man that young… There are several here with MS or some such degenerative disease. More wheelchairs, walkers, canes than you can imagine.

One of the things that amazes me is how we can sail for days without seeing another ship or land. We are truly out there and the water is the bluest blue. We eat amazing meals and see a show each night and then stop by the piano bar to enjoy a get a chocolate coin every night on our turned down beds.

I guess you could call life at sea decadent. J

Day 21 at Sea, January 25

Every day, someone changes the carpet in the elevator to reflect what day it is. We really need that reminder because days flow into each other and it’s easy to forget. There are so many little things that make cruising such a pleasure. I have a cold so I’m not an especially happy camper. Too many people coughing and not covering their mouths. I sit out on Lido deck every day—it’s open and the pool is here along with the large Lido restaurant which is a buffet. I take a dip whenever I get too warm. A wonderful breeze has been blowing . I am tanning, though I don’t sit in the sun.

Pitcairn Island --Mutany on the Bounty

January 23, Day 19 at Sea

Think Mutany on the Bounty and Fletcher Christian. This is the island he brought the Bounty to after he’d tossed off Captain Bly. Set him and his faithful in this vast blue ocean and it was a miracle they survived. Was Bly really the bad guy here. Some are not so sure. In 1790 the mutineers along with their Tahitian companions settled here and set fire to the Bounty so avoid being found by the British. The wreck is still visible under water in Bounty Bay. Today we circled Pitcairn Island, but were unable to anchor out and send passengers in. There are only about 45-65 people here from nine families. Instead of us going ashore, the townspeople came to us in a longboat. They set up shop on the Lido deck and gave a slide presentation.

Ron had his picture taken with Michelle and Natalie Christian, direct decedents of Fletcher Christian. They brought all kinds of gift items and souvenirs and even brought a post office. We mailed two cards with Pitcairn stamps to Caryl and David. Kids, don’t expect these until March!

We sent our islanders off with lots of food and supplies to thank them for coming aboard and such. They were wonderful. Amidst all that, I did a class on creating characters. Once the islanders were gone, we set sail and are headed for Tahiti. Yeah! Love to all!

January 21, Day 17 at sea

Poetry day—I worked. Grateful for the time change as it seemed I had more than a full day. We changed the time back the night before. My class went well. Several shared some amazing poetry. Time change again tonight. Observations.

Class today was grammer day. Kind of fun. It was our last meeting in the theater. Now we will be in the Piano bar. No drinks. J

Great Big Stone Heads

January 20, Day 16 at Sea

We are anchored just off the town of Hanga Roa, Easter Island (Rapa Nui). Everyone is excited about their tours or just visiting the island. The captain came on the loud speaker with the bad news that with 10 foot waves crashing in to the dock area and the rocks, it is too dangerous to tender people in. He won’t promise anything, but they will move us to another, southerly part of the island in hopes we will

have better luck.

There are a lot of disappointed people as many of these people came on this world tour because of this stop. Several people passed me (I’m on the Lido Deck writing) singing Kae Sera Sera. They are adjusting.

It’s late afternoon now and what a day. Our captain Olaf is a hero. He anchored just off shore and we can see a beautiful cove with a sandy beach—clear aqua and blue waters. He went ashore in a tender himself to make certain it was safe for us. When he returned, he made the announcement that only those without physical disabilities could go ashore. We had to take the tender to shore and go through another stabilized tender in order to reach the shore as waters were still a bit rough.

Vans and busses had come from the original site to meet the people who had booked tours. Natives were camped there and I wondered if they might live there. After disembarking, we connected with another couple. Sharon and Allen (they speak decent Spanish) and checked out the taxis to go to the town of Hanga Roa. They all wanted too much money—like $40 per person.

So, we took photos of the stone heads—amazing by the way, and the beautiful cove, then went to another area where locals were camped and had a number of stalls. There we found Carlos who volunteered to drive us round trip into town (18 mi.) and back and wait for us while we shopped at the market. He charged us $10 each. What a deal. A very sweet man.

We discovered that the town was not all that exciting, but the sights on the way made the trip worthwhile. Cows and horses roamed free, crossing the road at will. We caught glimpse of the ocean as we drove and were happy to get back to the wonderful beach. Our only disappointment was that the post office in town was closed for siesta and we couldn’t buy the local stamps. We did get some postcards at the market though.

Once home, I took a dip in the pool, talked with my friend, retired nurse, Barbara, and then dinner. We were later entertained by Johnny O who played an electronic wind instrument—quite good. Later Diane entertained us with great songs and shared the port song she wrote: Great Big Stone Heads to the tune of Lady in Red. Very cute and funny.

5th Day at Sea--Wow!

January 19, Day 15 at sea

What a lovely day. Mostly sunny. I had my Scandinavian breakfast of pickled herring, smoked salmon and hard boiled egg plus papaya and blueberries.

This is the longest I have ever been at sea and it’s rather fascinating. Did you know that the Pacific Ocean encompasses one third of the Earth’s surface, making it the largest body of water with an area of 69.4 million square miles—an area significantly larger than the entire Earth’s landmass?

The long time cruisers seem quite at home. I really don’t miss the land and have become acclimatized to the movement. What has been a bit difficult is lecturing each day and doing the preparation. I have not been able to work on my own writing for several days. I am however scheduling some easier classes the next couple of days at sea.

Did you know what December’s birthstone is now Tanzanite? We had a class on gemstones. While I have always liked turquoise, I love now having a rare and expensive gem! I have my eye on a gorgeous ring and necklace, but am afraid to find out what it costs. My dreams will be shattered. J

So tomorrow we anchor just off Easter Island and tenders will take us to shore. We’re excited. I’ll share more about the island tomorrow.

No Ships, No Land--Only Sea

January 18, Day 14 at sea.

At sea all day again today. We have not seen another ship or any land since leaving Peru. You would be amazed at how many lectures and events and activities are stuffed into sea days.

Once again I spent my morning working on class. Today’s was Journaling with Ease. No hot tubs still, but the pool is open. And yes—white caps and waves again.

Tonight was Casino Night and we went formal. We have two new tablemates at dinner. Delores and Waldo. Yes—we have found Waldo. They are a delightful couple in their late eighties and expert cruisers. We are learning so much from these long time cruise people. They love being here. I can certainly see why.

The entertainment was a group called the Horizons who were quite good—did a medley of mo-town music. We didn’t stay though as we got too warm. People had been complaining about the cold so the captain took us from frigid to tropical. It got really warm. I felt sorry for the group with all those lights. One guy had to keep wiping his brow. Called himself the Rainman because we was always dripping. J

Rockin' and a Rollin'

January 17, Day 13 at Sea

The ship is still rocking and rolling and I am still feeling a bit qoozy. However, the show must go on. This morning—all mornings, actually, we are treated to birds singing in the main dining room. A recording, but very realistic. It’s always pleasant in the formal dining room. We eat most of our meals there. At the moment I am on Lido deck working on my power point.

Things are a bit different today. We’ve been told that there is a virus on board that is spreading. Not a lot of cases yet, but they are not taking chances. We have to use a lot of anti-bacterial lotion and not touch anything. No shaking hands and no dancing with strangers. J The dance escorts on board are on standby and not allowed to dance with the ladies. I’m tickled with the adjustments people have made and the good naturedness. Instead of shaking hands many have taken to touching elbows. It’s as if touch is still very important. Long time cruisers take these things in stride.

I’ve noticed a lot of people are using their e-readers. Some however are reading real books. Because of the sanitation rules, all books in the library are locked up. If you want a book, the librarian will get it for you and when you return a book it gets sanitized. How does one sanitize a book?

It’s evening now and my class went very well. My title was Let’s Get Ideas.

Rough Waters

January 17, Day 13 at Sea

We are still at sea and we still have ocean-like waves and whitecaps in the pool. I spent much of the morning preparing power point for my class and writing some. I’m doing quite a few power point presentations and suspect I’ll have about 45 different classes when I’m through. Tried to get on line earlier, but we are at sea in the middle of nowhere so signals aren’t the greatest.

I have taken seasick pills twice today. During my class I wobbled about a little, feeling like I’d had a glass of wine too many. Diane, one of my students said to do the Tai Chi horse pose or some such with my knees bend slightly. Also green apples are supposed to help.

My class was called Let’s Get Ideas and I talked about not only getting ideas, but unblocking the mind so ideas could flow. I talked about creativity being locked up by criticism and fear. Also talked about releasing those critics and embracing ones creativity.

After class, I met Ron in the Crow’s Nest for tea and then headed to Lido deck to have a short swim and hot tub. It’s such a nice place.

Dinner is always a fascinating affair—interesting foods prepared in interesting ways. And almost everything is good. There is a romance writer on board who comes to my classes. I have yet to meet her for a one on one. It’s interesting how you see some people nearly everywhere you go, but others you rarely if ever encounter.

Tonight’s show time features a piano duet.

White Caps in the Swimming Pool!

January 16, Day 12 at Sea

We’re heading in a south-westerly direction toward Easter Island. The swimming pool looks like a miniature ocean with white caps and waves. Seas are choppy and my tummy is feeling the wave action. I had to take some meclazine (sea-sick pills) today. Nothing severe. In fact I made it through my class without a sign of nausea. The class went well—only a couple of people read, but it was productive.

I went to bed after dinner—just not feeling well. Ron went to hear the comedian. I was going to go to Karaoke at nine, but my tummy decided against it. So early to bed and not so early to rise. J

Lima Highlights

January 15; Day 11 at sea

We are still docked in Lima. Today I took a Highlight tour of the city. Saw some amazing architecture and learned a bit about the history. On the way we passed through poverty. There was an old woman selling candy on the sidewalk and a less than a block away men in white shirts and ties, dressed to the nines, were conducting business on the stock market and in the banks.

We toured several cathedrals—among them St. Francis. Wow! There is a lot of weather and earthquake damage, but the artwork is phenomenal. We weren’t allowed to take photos inside. So many paintings and tile work. We also saw down into one of the catacombs where several skeletons were exposed. The guide said they had found bones of infants and suggested that perhaps the nuns and priests got together for more than prayers. Not a nice conclusion.

We also say the presidents palace and a number of government buildings. They’ll be having an election in April and the streets were full of campaign posters.

While I found the history and architecture fascinating, what really caught my attention were the number of buildings with unfinished roofs. There would be maybe two stories and while some of the buildings may have sustained earthquake danmage, others were waiting for the residents to come up with enough money to complete them. Also, the tour guide said there are many unfinished because people don’t have to pay as much tax if they are not completed. On many of the rooftops you could see colorful clothing hanging on the lines. I suspect people lived on the rooftops as well among the debri.

Lima is very dirty as they have very little or no rain. Water comes from underground sources and they except to run out of water in ten years. There is a lot of vegetation however and this is apparently due to the 80-to 90 percent humidity factor. This is a good thing because rain would destroy those buildings build on the cliffs. I’m hoping to share some photos with you soon, though with the internet, that might not be possible.

Near the ship is a small marketplace for folks who don’t like to venture out. They sold sweaters and other items made with 100% alpaca wool. We found postage cards finally and mailed out three.

Neither Ron’s mom nor mine have internet access. It costs $2.50 per card to mail so I’m glad we have the internet. J

We had another wonderful evening—attended the sail away party, but we didn’t sail. Apparently we were waiting for some people to get back from their Machu Picchu tour. There are so many tours I’d like to take, but since this is our first time in Port and since some of these tours run $1000 to $8000 apiece, we’re sort of slumming it. J This is such a gift, And I am so grateful for the opportunity.

Callia (Lima) Peru

July 14 Day 10 at Sea

We are in port. Ron and I took a shuttle into Mira Flores. Mira Flores and Callia are basically suburbs of Lima. Combined area of around 9 million people. On the drive, we went through the slums and crossed into more upscale area. We drove for much of the time along the ocean. We were dropped off at a very plush Marriot that sat directly across from a lovely park. We were told there was a shopping mall there, but couldn’t see anything like that. Someone directed us across the street and down the steps. Moments later we were in the most amazing shopping center I’ve ever seen. Three layers of stores were tucked into the cliff walls. Many restaurants—TGIF, Tony Romas, and several local places. There was even a Starbucks! We chose a local restaurant with balconies that jutted out over the cliff wall. I had a Pico Sour (the local drink) and Ron had a banana split. I would have liked a lunch, but we had just eaten before getting on the shuttle.

We found a Hush Puppy store and Ron bought shoes!! After dinner, we watched a glorious sunset. Ron took pictures. We then went to the theater to watch a Celine Dion documentary that was fabulous except for the very narrow bar of movie that distorted everything and made her look twice as wide as tall. Ron left shortly after it started but I stayed for the entire two hours. Love her singing and the tour was fascinating.

We met up again at the Piano Bar to listen to music and sing along. Diane plays our favorite music and has an amazing repertoire. At ten or so, we seem to turn into pumpkins.

Sailing Sailing Over the Deep Blue Sea

July 13, Day 9 at Sea

Missed posting for a few days as internet wasn’t the best. Or maybe it's my timing.

We had a great day, just hanging out. I worked on my book for a while. Got my Guidepost book back and began the rewrites. Nothing truly major this time. I walked a fair amount, and that is a good thing.

At 2 pm I had my creative writing class. Writing Beyond What You See. Had a good sized group again. Talked about getting under the surface. It went well except for the flower arranging people who had the theater after me. They came in a bit too early. But ah well. Grace!

Evening festivities were amazing. Formal again. The entire ship was decorated in black and silver as we had the Captain’s Black and Silver Ball. Amazing. Sadly, Ron (still without dress shoes) decided to eat dinner in his room. I on the other hand was not about to pass up lobster so I ate in the dining room in my black and silver top with matching jacket and dress slacks. I looked rather elegant if I do say so myself. J After dinner, Ron joined me at our favorite piano bar. We later went to the ball. The floor and tables were littered with tiny black hats and silver stars. People danced on stage as well as on the dance floor. We didn’t dance. By then it was past ten and I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I noticed a number of people yawning. J We walked out on the promenade deck for a bit before retiring. What a life.

Passing the Equator--Cheers! Ole!

January 11 -- Day 7 at Sea

Another day at sea. Up at 5:30 to walk the promenade for a mile. Today I watched the pinnacle Grill chef make his famous crab cakes. Yum. He used Dungeness crab with no bready fillers. Just crab, finely diced vegetables: red peppers, garlic, onion, chives. He used mayo to hold the mixture together, made small cakes and coated them with panko. The sauce was excellent.

I had my class at 2:00 today—opposite Mitzi Gaynor. I didn’t expect many, but I had as many or more than I did the first day. I did a workshop on creativity and had several good writers. Most of them are there to journal or write memoirs.

At the evening show we had the ms Amsterdam singers who did a medley of tunes from the 50^’s.Did I mention that Ron and I are among the young ones here—well except for some of the entertainers?

After the show we walked a 2/3 of a mile before turning in. I considered staying up until 1 when we were scheduled to cross the equator. Our first crossing. To celebrate we were treated to champaign at dinner. The captain promised he wouldn’t make the announcement when we crossed, though if I hadn’t been so tired I’d have been tempted to stay up for the occasion. If I had stayed up I’d likely have missed it since there are no strings of lights or signs on the water.

Tomorrow early, we arrive in Ecuador, which by the way means equator.

January 12 -- Day 8 at Sea

We are docked at Manta Ecuador. We were provided with a shuttle to take us off the port and into town to the market place. It was like far too many market places. The locals push their wares. Ron bought a Panama hat for a good price. Taxi drivers descended on us wanting to take us for a ride. I bought a jade-like cross. I’m wishing now that I had gotten a small painting but I suspect there will be more at the next port which is near Lima, Peru. Manta is big on exporting tuna. Lots of fishing boats in and around the harbor.

We were back aboard before lunchtime and spent another leisurely day by the pool and in the dining room. I wrote a bit—still haven’t settled in or found my perfect spot.

Tomorrow is another day at sea and another class. I’ll be continuing my sessions on creativity. “Writing Beyond What You See.”

Getting on the internet continues to be somewhat difficult. I couldn’t post today—hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Costa Rica and the Panama Canal

January 9, Sunday Day 5 at Sea

We are docked in Puerto Limon, Costa Rica

Seasoned travelers have indicated that this is not a very clean town. Ron was asked to escort a group to an ariel tram which takes 7 hours. He wasn’t feeling well so had to decline. We went ashore and shopped at the market place. Lots of souvenirs, but no dress shoes. We couldn’t fine postcards either. The night before at the formal dress evening, Ron had to wear his sandals. I don’t think anyone noticed. At least he didn’t get kicked out of the dining room.

We’ve discovered that at least one woman lives aboard. I haven’t met her yet, but I think it is the woman with straight white hair that goes to her waist in the back. She wears these unusual hats as in fuzzy bunny hats. She is usually dressed in what look like pajamas and slippers. I think the dress rules don’t apply to her.

At any rate it’s a lovely day and I walked 2/3 of a mile in the morning. I’m losing the weight battle, but hope to get back on an even keel. It’s warm and humid here—tropical. I spent most of the day lounging around and taking cat-naps. Ron and I are both very tired. We are not doing well with the late dinner seating. Ron managed to get us switched to the 5:30 dinner. Much better. Our tablemates are Valdimar an older gentleman and his son Brent. Brent is a chef and talked about the finer points of our meals. They are from Victoria!

We’re losing an hour tonight. Showtime at 8 pm featured an amazing harpist from Argentina.

I am rethinking my post on Mitzi Gaynor’s show. I haven’t seen her on board, but someone said she could hardly walk. I decided that she’s pretty gutsy to continue performing.

Tonight we sail to Panama and the canal. What an experience that will be.

January 10 Day 6 at Sea

The Panama Canal

How amazing. We were up at 5:30 am, Ron ran and I went out on the bow to watch the ship approach the first of three series of locks. We had overcast skies and as we were entering the first lock, it began to rain. Over the course of the day we wove through a number of islands, passed through several locks, finally coming to Panama City. The city is much larger than I ever imagined. A million people in the city and about three million in the country. It rained off and on, but what’s a little rain when you’re moving through one of the wonders of the world.

I managed to write two pages this morning. I spent most of the day poolside as it was very warm and humid. Nice to be able to cool off whenever.

Our entertainment tonight features a pianist from the UK. He’s brilliant and funny and very talented. We’ve been enjoying all of the shows. Nice way to end the day. After the show, we stopped at the Rembrandt Lounge to listen to Diane Fast sing and play. She was in my first writing class and would like to write screen plays.

We’re on our way to Ecuador. Since we are at sea tomorrow, I will have my second class. Can you believe I am scheduled at the same time as an interview with Mitzi Gaynor! Uf da! I will be surprised if I have any students at all. J

Jan 8 Day 4 at sea

We are sailing toward Puerto Limon, Costa Rica. I spent much of the morning pulling down e-mail and posting my blog. Used nearly 60 precious internet minutes. I went to the culinary lecture this morning and to my surprise, the chef is the owner of Matt’s Restaurant at Pike St. Market in Seattle. He showed us how to sear a perfect salmon. He really used too much oil for most people, me included. I suggested using cooking spray instead. Not sure if that was appreciated. My salmon is near perfect as well. J

After a nice lunch in the dining room, I had to rush back to my room to get ready for my class. The tech had everything together and set up my power point. Not one technical problem. Some of you OCW conference people will appreciate that. I had quite a number of people and feel we’ll have some good critique groups. I did an introduction and overview and gave them an assignment. My next class day is the day after tomorrow after we leave Panama. We’ll get down to business then.

Evening came on us rather quickly. It was formal night and I wore my long black sleeveless dress with my new purple/blue elegant jacket and rhinestone shoes. The Captain had his welcome party before dinner with drinks and appetizers and an introduction of the officers. Dinner at eight was way too slow—took two hours and then it was time for the show. Mitzi Gaynor was our entertainment. I wasn’t really entertained. She’s in her eighties and is still in good shape, but her voice is shot, she moves slowly and I personally think she might want to consider leaving show business behind. She seemed a bit pathetic— she could have been elegant and maintained an air of dignity. Unfortunately, she came off as being needy. I felt sorry for her.

We’ve arrived in Grand Cayman, but Georgetown, our planned stop was too dangerous for the tenders so we are on another part of the island—anchored offshore. I decided to stay on board as I didn’t really have any shopping to do and we’ve been here before. It’s been quiet. I was able to get on the internet but it took 30 of my precious minutes to go through my e-mail messages.

Ron went ashore as an escort to a group going to seven mile beach. I tried to write but had people wanting to talk—not about writing. I may have to write in my room for a couple of hours each morning so I can get something done.

Tomorrow I offer my first class at one pm. It’ll be interesting to see who shows up. Went to tea with Ron at three and had my eyebrows waxed at 4:15. At the moment I am writing this blog page. It is just after seven. We’re underway, heading to Costa Rica.

Time for dinner and to send this blog.

SECOND DAY AT SEA

Gorgeous day. We slept in until eight, and went to breakfast in the elegant dining room. Lovely view. I had the Eggs Royale, which is like Eggs Benedict with Salmon rather than Canadian bacon. Yum.

After breakfast I went to the library to buy minutes and met one of the musicians. After talking a bit, she said the crew gets a discount on the internet soooo, I went in search of an answer and found that yes, I could pay $40 for 450 minutes and get a card. How much better is that than $250 for 1000 minutes.

Lifeguard drill at 10:30 We met David and Annette. She’s an editor. I wrote from 1-2 by the pool. We had late lunch at 2 on the Lido Deck where the pools are after hearing a lecture on the Caribbean by Dr. Adrian Cooper from London. Interesting.

I still don’t know my teaching schedule and am waiting for my internet card. Tea at 3 where I met an interesting woman from the Netherlands. Tea was served in the Crow’s nest, a lounge on the top floor that boasts a panoramic view. Lovely tea.

It’s now after five and I have been at the pool since 3:45. It’s perfect. My computer is home, rejuicing. Speaking of juice—we get fresh squeezed OJ. Oh, and one more thing: they have chocolate bread pudding. Uh-oh, I’m in trouble here.

We arrived in Ft. Lauderdale on time—6:20 am. Sleep deprived and hungry. We ate breakfast at the airport—don’t ever try breakfast at Chili’s. At 8:45 we hailed a taxi and reached the port in about ten minutes. I had no contact person and no instructions on how to board the ship. However, I did have passes to embark. The ship had come in, but with a couple thousand people disembarking things were rather chaotic.

So started the waiting game and the rather non-brilliant security guard who gave us wrong instructions. We weren’t on the manifold because of our last minute status. However, one of the ship officers heard our name and said—we’ve been looking for you. I thought, finally. We’re going to be taken care of. But no, she said, “When you got off the plane, you picked up the wrong luggage.”

“No,” Ron and I both said. “That can’t be.” Ron had picked them up. I went to look and sure enough one of our bags was not ours. Ron had to take a taxi back to the airport, make the switch and get another cab back to the ship. The miracle is that the airport people found us and caught us before we boarded the ship. Whew!!!

Another two hours later we tried to get someone’s attention again. Once more I showed them our passes to board the ship. “One of the security guards said, “You can go right on with those.” And so, the delay allowed us to get our luggage. Finally we boarded and once again we weren’t on the manifest, neither did we have a room assignment. In short order though one of the ship’s officers gave us back our passports and sent us up to the office.

We are in 3307 and we have a window. We’re on the promenade deck. We put our things away and at 2:30 went up to the Lido deck to grab some lunch. The restaurant was closing, but we got salads.

Our room keys (cards) are also our method of payment. Looking over the schedule for the day, I noticed that we were to make dinner reservations or changes by four. I went to make sure we had 5:30 seating since neither of us like to eat late. Well everyone else (most people here are older) wanted early dinner as well and since we were last minute…” So we hung around and did a tour of the ship. In the Queen’s Lounge we discovered the cruise director introducing the supplemental staff (of which I am one)

Ron and I joined them and I was introduced as well and received some instructions. Nice of them to let me know before hand. J But hey—God had been taking care of things all along, why stop now. We were to be part of the 9:30 pm show where Bruce, the cruise director would introduce his staff and us supplementals.

More wandering around. Our ship, the mc Ansterdam was built in Italy in 2000 and had been updated. There is an internet café/library/coffee shop called Explorations. I found out that the internet costs $250 for 1,000 minutes. Yikes.

At 8 and went into the La Fontaine Restaurant. Very elegant. We were seated at a table by the window 17 with two other couples. Lee and Ken are from Canada just north of Bellingham. Ron and Pat (yes, our table mates are Ron and Pat) are from Fargo, ND. Lee and Ken were married in 1963, same as us, and Ron was married in 63 to his first wife.

We had to rush out before dessert so we could attend the meeting prior to show time and be told what to do and where to go so we’d be on the stage in the wings when Bruce was ready for us. Supplementals included me (creative writing) Marie (arts and crafts), yoga, dance lessons, computer use, 5 male escorts to dance with the single ladies and bridge instructors. The arts and crafts lady made it on board, but her luggage and all of her supplies didn’t.

At this point I don’t know where or when my class will be or start. Fortunately, we don’t have to begin our classes until our second day at Sea which is Saturday. On our first day at sea, we went to bed around eleven after picking up an ice cream snack. My legs hurt so badly, I could hardly walk so I took some Aleeve.

The beds are comfortable, nice pillows and room for all of our luggage. Oh, and Ron forgot to pack his dress shoes so he can’t go to the formal dinners. It looks as though he might be able to pick up a pair in the Cayman Islands.

The Journey Begins

Our visa arrived from the Indian Embassy at 10:30 pm on Tuesday Jan 4^th after them saying it couldn’t be done. At 11m Ron and I went to the doctor to get a waiver on the yellow fever vaccine since we were not going into any yellow fever ports. After a bit, she was able to come up with the right language. We were ready to go.

I e-mailed and called the booking agency as soon as we got home—no answer so I left a voice mail. As it turned out they were having trouble with their phones and their internet provider.

I called again an hour later and a short time after that, the agency called back. They gave me a contact person at Holland America (HAL). I called him and no answer—twice. Around 2:30 I finally reached his real voice. Ten minutes later he called me back with a flight number.

At 5:50 pm we were on our way to LA. I’ll tell you all about the traumatic transfer from Alaska Airlines to Delta. Oh, my goodness. Talk about your third world country. Two busses, a terrifying ride ON the tarmac, and two sets of two story stairs carrying our baggage later we arrived at Delta to find our plane was late. Poor Ron had to climb the stairs multiple times because I can’t carry heavy stuff. No elevators except for wheelchair people. We were aghast to say the least.

By 11 pm we were on the redeye to Ft. Lauderdale. Our seatmate was a Hispanic guy who looked like he was about to fall asleep on his feet. He had a carry on and said to the attendant, “I have a medical condition. Of course, my ears perked right up. Then he said, “I just had brain surgery and I need help.” No wonder he seemed a bit off.

The attendant helped him get his bag in the overhead. Over the next four hours we discovered that he’d had this surgery two days ago and had undergone a chemo treatment. I’m thinking who in their right mind would let this guy fly home alone? He lives in Ft. Lauderdale and worked as an artist.

He slept much of the way, but when he was awake one could see that he was not ready for prime time. The attendant gave him a ginger-ale and a skinny straw. He stirred it round and round about a dozen times, and then put the straw in his mouth. Instead of drawing the soda up, he blew bubbles.

There’s a story in this somewhere and my mind is already at work on it.

Exciting news!!!

Our India visas were delivered to the American office in SF today and they sent it to me for arrival tomorrow. That means we may fly out tomorrow night! It also means we will board the ship in Ft. Lauderdale and be able to enjoy the entire journey.

Some of you have been praying about this because we were told we couldn't possibly get the visas before Jan 5. So we are two days early.

I am so excited. Still tons of stuff to do, but it's coming together.

Blogging at Sea with Pat Rushford

Hi all

I'm going to try this blog thing again. Mostly because some of my friends want to share my travel experiences.

I have been given the opportunity of a lifetime--well maybe a dozen lifetimes.

For the next four months I will be cruising around the world on the ms Amsterdam with Holland America. I'll be onboard as a lecturer on creative writing and journaling. My husband, Ron, will be my guest.

I couldn't be more excited and I hope you'll be joining me as I share experiences and share photos. I'm not sure how this bloging works quite yet, but I guess I'll find out.
